The contactless card PIN limit is increasing from $100 to $200

April 16, 2020

From April 7, 2020, the payments industry will be temporarily increasing the contactless card PIN limit from $100 to $200. This is to help reduce the risk of COVID-19 transmission by reducing the need for customers to touch an EFTPOS machine with their hands to enter their PIN.

For a transaction to be eligible, 2 things are required:

1. Your EFTPOS machine provider must have this enabled.
2. The issuer of the customer’s card must have enabled it. If the new limit has been introduced on the customer’s card, the customer will be prompted to tap their card for purchases up to $200, and NO PIN will be required. If the new limit is not available on the customer’s card, they will still be prompted to enter their PIN for purchases over $100.

If you’re a Tyro customer, there’s no need for you to do anything – Tyro has automatically pushed out the required changes to all Tyro EFTPOS machines. Tyro EFTPOS machines are now able to take transactions up to $200 without the customer having to enter a PIN, provided your customer’s card issuer has enabled it.

As this new limit is a temporary measure in response to COVID-19, it is expected to apply for a three-month period, and will be extended if necessary, based on Government advice.

Why leave it there?
